Treatments for sore throat

Sore throat feels irritating, itchy, uncomfortable – in other words, painful. It may get worse when you eat or drink certain foods. Sore throat  can be treated with antibiotics as well as many natural treatments. But if you’re not sure what to try, here are a few options for treating a sore throat.

Natural remedies for sore throat

Gargle with warm salt water

One of the oldest homemade natural remedies for sore throat is gargling with warm salt water. It can help relieve pain, relieve mucus and reduce swelling.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 250 ml of water

Manufacturing

  • Add salt to water and mix well.
  • Gargle up in your mouth and throat for a few seconds and spit out the liquid: the liquid should not be swallowed or reused.
  • It is recommended to repeat this once an hour.

Hot lemon drinks

Lemon tea can be used to treat a sore throat.

You’ve probably heard of this lemon drink before, or some variation of it. There is a good reason for that: it works!

Ingredients

  • 1 lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 250 ml of water

Manufacturing

  • Add lemon juice and honey to hot water, mix well and enjoy.

It is important not to use these ingredients too much; therefore, use them sparingly.

Honey

Honey is used for many health problems, and sore throat is no exception. It can help defeat coughs and relieve sore throats. Honey covers the throat, so it calms the coughing irritation momentarily.

  • In general, it is recommended to take 2 tablespoons of honey at bedtime to relieve night cough and sore throat and to improve sleep quality. People who eat honey before going to bed cough less and the cough is not as hard. They are also more likely to sleep better compared to people who do not use honey.
  • You can also add 1 teaspoon of honey to drinks or enjoy it with 1 teaspoon during the day.

Note:  Honey should never be given to children under 1 year of age because of its risk of botulism.

Sage

Sage tea helps relieve swelling and inflammation of the throat.

As an herbal remedy, sage tea is very useful in treating quite a variety of throat infections. It brings effective short-term relief. Sage contains components such as sineol, borneol, camphor and thujone, and has  astringent properties that can help relieve sore throat  and reduce swelling and inflammation.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon dried sage leaves or a spoonful of fresh sage leaves
  • 250 ml of water

Manufacturing

  • Boil water and add 1 teaspoon of dried or fresh sage leaves.
  • Let simmer for 10-15 minutes, strain and drink.
  • You can add lemon and honey if you wish.

Note:  Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid sage as a supplement.

Cough lozenges

Cough lozenges – whether homemade or store-bought – can help with a sore throat. Sucking on cough lozenges, especially those that contain refreshing ingredients such as eucalyptus or mint, stimulates salivation, which in turn relieves sore throat.

Take a shower

A hot shower helps with a sore throat.

Dry air is the most damaging thing to your throat. For that reason, you should try to keep it as moist as possible. Humidifiers, for example, are especially useful in winter.

  • When the air is dry in your home or outdoors,  take a hot shower.
  • You can also put a hot water tap to run and sit in the bathroom for a minute breathing steam.
