There are facts that show that managing hunger and appetite is a complex system that is also affected by what we eat or drink ( including coffee ). A group of researchers wanted to find out if the world’s most popular drink has an effect on hunger. So what is the connection between coffee and hunger?

Many use regular coffee to control their appetite. It is true that coffee gives great energy and makes you feel more alert. It even improves physical performance and curbs appetite. However, there are studies that show that if you want to lose weight, it is best to drink decaffeinated coffee.

So is coffee healthy? It depends on many things. The researchers looked at two assumptions to determine the link between coffee and hunger:

Assumption # 1 : Coffee (decaffeinated or caffeinated) reduces hunger, leptin and ghrelin and increases satiety and peptide YY.

Assumption # 2 : Same effect as the first assumption, but with the exception that the effect lasts only 60 minutes after a meal or even 120 minutes, which the body takes to digest food.

A group of volunteers drank coffee and shared their feelings three hours after that. The conclusions were as follows:

  • Although caffeine is used to suppress appetite, decaffeinated coffee reduced hunger (and two hormones) the most as well as increased peptide.
  • A higher amount of peptide YY results in a lower feeling of hunger. Participants in the experiment said they did not starve for three hours, although their PYY levels dropped after an hour and a half.
  • One interesting finding was that the decrease in hunger and the increase in peptide remained at the same level until the person ingested glucose. From this it can be concluded that some coffee ingredients do not modify digestion.

Maybe coffee will go hungry because it modifies the saturation hormone.

Coffee cannot be expected to be a magical solution to appetite. If you don’t eat properly every day, it’s more likely that your stomach will always ask for more and more food.
