Do you love the sweet and fresh taste of pineapple ? Tired of waiting for the pineapple season? Why pay for malt from a store-bought pineapple when you can grow pineapples easily from your home! With the following guidelines, pineapple growing is an easy and fun project for the whole family. All you need to grow is the head of a eaten pineapple, a jug of water and a flower pot the size of it can fit comfortably in it.

Why grow a pineapple at home?

Pineapple can be grown at home

Growing an exotic pineapple at home is easy. First and foremost, you should buy fresh pineapple from the store and store it in a ‘hat’. If you want to grow many pineapples, get as many hats as you want to grow – one pin grows one pineapple. To grow a pineapple, I need a jug of water, a flowerpot, and patience: growing a pineapple takes time, but watching it develop is fun.

Pineapples are healthy and contain a lot of nutrients and vitamins that are useful for the body, e.g. potassium, folic acid, vitamin C and vitamins B1 and B6. Pineapple acts as a natural diuretic and helps remove toxins from the body, it is also high in fiber, which keeps the stomach happy and bowel function normal. In addition to all this, pineapple speeds up metabolism and fat burning, kills parasites in the gut and facilitates digestive function. Awesome, isn’t it?

Pineapple can be used for pastries, salads, grilling and frying. It goes well with meat dishes. Pineapple can be juiced for breakfast to drink – what a wonderful way to start the morning energetically! We recommend growing pineapple in summer, as Finland’s dark and cold winter can be fatal.

Pineapple growing at home

First of all, you should choose a good quality pineapple, whose hat is used to grow new fruit. Choose a ripe pineapple that hasn’t softened too much and whose hat is still vibrant green and stiff. Do not buy pineapples that have withered leaves or that smell strongly, as such pineapples are already ripe enough not to be grown new. Prefer organic whenever possible, as organic pineapples have not been treated with toxic chemicals or insecticides.

Check that the small spikes in the pineapple peel are not darkened or grayed out and that there are no bugs in the pineapple. Overall, the pineapple should look fresh and fresh.

First phase

Pineapple growing begins with the removal of the pineapple hat

Remove the pineapple hat. Do not cut with a knife, but take a firm grip at the base of the hat and twist it off with a wrist movement. Twisting the hat off will give you more natural roots than cutting.

Roots have grown in the pineapple hat

Next comes the neat attachment point for the hat. Remove any flesh attached to it and wipe it dry with a cloth. Roots begin to grow at the site of attachment, so it is important that it does not begin to rot as the flesh ages. The image above is an example of what the roots growing in a hat look like.

Second stage

Put the pineapple hats in the water

This step is very important. The hats must stay alive, ie they must not dry out. Fill the jug or large jar with water (try first that the pineapple hat will fit in it) and place the pineapple hat in the water as shown.

The hat must remain in the water for at least three weeks, at which time the roots begin to develop gradually. The water should be changed every day and the jug should be placed in a place in the home where there is a constant high temperature. The pineapple comes from warm conditions, so sunlight and heat do it good: a windowsill, kitchen table or balcony in the summer are all good places to grow pineapples.

The third stage

Growing pineapple yourself

Finally, after a multi-week growing project, your pineapple hat has grown abundant and well-being roots. Then follows the most important step of the rearing phase, i.e. removing the hat from the water and planting it in the soil. Use a clay flower pot, never plastic. Apply a layer of gravel to the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage.

Use regular mold for planting, nothing more miraculous is needed for this. Pineapple grows best in humid and warm conditions, but the soil does not need to be very wet and the pineapple does not need to be watered with a continuous feed. Plant the hat in the mold roots comfortably deep in the soil and place in a bright place.

Next, a lot of patience is needed, as the pineapple grows the fruit for at least a year from the time of planting. Root growth takes 6-8 weeks and after two months of rooting they are at their strongest. Pineapple only needs to be watered twice a week.

Don’t worry if the leaves of the hat fall off as it is normal and the pineapple will soon grow new leaves to replace it. Pineapple grows fastest during the warmer months and slows growth as the air cools. In winter, the pineapple does not grow. Although growing pineapples takes a long time, growing them at home is a fun project that doesn’t require much. Think how awesome it feels to taste your own home-grown pineapple after a long rearing!
