Are you looking for alternative solutions to help remove the bad smell from sandals? You can easily achieve this with homemade methods based on natural ingredients such as talc, clay, baking soda or essential oils.

Sandals are comfortable and eye-catching summer shoes that help keep your feet fresh even on hot days. Although the purpose of the sandals is to allow our feet to ventilate even in warm weather, the heat can still accumulate extra moisture and bad odor in them.

Some sandal materials tend to collect sweat and foot bacteria, the combination of which results in an unpleasant odor. If we don’t correct this smell in time, it will stick to the material and manifest strongly every time we wear these sandals on our feet.

However, some homemade solutions can help both alleviate the odor or even eliminate this unpleasant problem altogether. You just need to perform the treatment on the sandals immediately after use and get ready, the shoes will be completely clean and odorless the next morning!

1. White clay and essential oils

White clay is a natural product that has the ability to absorb various toxins and is therefore ideal for application directly to shoes and even feet.

White clay is a natural product that has the ability to absorb toxins. It is this property that makes it an excellent solution that can be added both directly to the skin and for oral use (provided, of course, that it is a clay product that can be used internally). In addition, the similarity of the clay to the talcum powder facilitates its use.

Today, clay can be found in shops specializing in natural products, as well as in well-stocked supermarkets and pharmacies. In addition, we can add some essential oils to it to give the clay a delicious aroma. We recommend, for example, an essential oil made from lavender, rosemary or lemon.

  • All you have to do is apply small amounts of this mixture to the sandals when you take them off your feet for the evening.
  • In addition, you can apply clay like talc in small amounts directly to the soles of the feet just before using the sandals to prevent unpleasant odors.
  • Plus, you can make pedicures from clay just as well as you would with a face mask. This foot mask helps to remove toxins and thus also blocks the unpleasant odor and sweat from the feet from the root.

2. Tea bags and essential oil made from mint

Do you tend to enjoy tea made from peppermint or mint? In this case, you should know that if you let the bags already used dry, you have a simple and economical, one hundred percent natural deodorant in your hands. These little tea bags can be used to freshen up both refrigerators, cupboards, cars and of course sandals.

  • After making the tea, move the tea bag to the side and allow it to dry.
  • To improve the pleasant aroma, we recommend impregnating the bags with a few drops of essential oil made from mint, for example. This way, if and when the bags start to lose their aroma, you can always add a few extra drops to the bags to enhance the aroma.

3. Baking soda, essential oils and citrus peels

Baking soda and citrus peels are a great tool to help you remove the bad smell from sandals

Baking soda has antibacterial properties that help disinfect sandals to remove and prevent unpleasant odors. This is why baking soda is probably one of the oldest natural solutions for removing the bad smell of both sandals and other footwear. Thanks to its versatile properties, this absorbent, anti-fungal and pH-balancing material is transformed into many different home tasks.

In this case, we suggest that baking soda be utilized along with a few other ingredients that we don’t normally utilize: citrus peels. The peel of citrus fruits is rich in nature’s own aromas and, in addition, releases a delicious citrus scent that is widely associated with freshness and purity.

  • First, peel the citrus fruits (lemon, orange, mandarin, or grapefruit to taste) into thin strips and add the peels to a clean jar along with baking soda.
  • It would be advisable not to chop the citrus peels too small to make it easier to apply the mixture to the shoes at a later stage.
  • Let the baking soda soak the shells in the jar for a few days.
  • Add the mixture in small amounts to the bottom of the sandals and let it work overnight so that the citrus peels along with the baking soda absorb any unpleasant odor.
